NEWSFLASH! SNICKER DUDE GETS OFF HIS ASS AND SUBMITS!!!
It finally happened. I submitted one of my stories to Chicken Soup for the Soul, and they accepted it. ‘The Most Important Day of My Life’ will be published in the ‘Think Possible’ edition, in bookstores October 6.
All week long, I’ve been floating as if in a dream. I’d slap myself to make sure it’s real, but people on my bus might be nervous if their driver behaved that way. It’s also hard to concentrate with all the excitement. My family and friends are all requesting “signed copies” of the book. One friend insisted that I contact my employer’s media relations team to let them know about it. It seems silly to me, because my story is but one of 101 in this edition. While it’s gratifying they want an autograph, it seems more appropriate to wait until my first novel is published. However, anyone who knows me is aware of my procrastinatory nature. If it took me over three decades to get published again, who knows when I’ll finish that book?
While all this attention is nice, it also makes me a tad uncomfortable. While I love to write, and also enjoy having people read my creations, I’m not fond of intense attention. This makes for a strange combination. I have an ego, but I prefer to keep it subdued. Any time in my life when I’ve gotten too big for my britches, something has always knocked me down more than a peg or two. I’m naturally wary of vast amounts of praise. Plus, the awareness that I’m usually NOT the “cat’s meow” helps keep my head from swelling.
It’s just one story, Patrick. Hopefully, the first of many publications. Just keep it real, boy.
